Katy Salter dishes up the local gastro need-to-know

Medcalf has opened a new traiteur next door to its Exmouth Market restaurant. The new spot is housed in the restaurant’s former gallery space. By day you can enjoy simple British dishes like slow-cooked pork belly, or grilled salmon with marinated fennel, all cooked on the restaurant’s Big Green Egg BBQ (the Rolls Royce of BBQs, according to most chefs). At night, candles flicker on the central table and the traiteur transforms into a wine bar.

Say no to dodgy doners and a big yes to posh kebabs. Chifafa is a new arrival on Clerkenwell Road and its offerings are a world away from 2am shavings from the ‘donkey leg’. Think ethically reared meat, cooked on a Big Green Egg (yes, again!) and stuffed into freshly-baked souvlaki bread. Chifafa is the creation of Nick Green and Matthew Kershaw, who were inspired by a gourmet kebab stand they discovered on a trip to Berlin. Welcome to the neighbourhood, chaps.

Fans of seasonal cocktails should grab their mini paper umbrellas and head to Bourne & Hollingsworth Buildings on Northampton Road. The brasserie and bar has launched a cocktail menu combining British ingredients with Mediterranean herbs. Seasonal libations include a Fig and Thyme Scofflaw – fig and thyme-infused cognac, vanilla liqueur, lemon, ginger and apple. The Cydonian Smash includes quince and rosemary jam with ginger, lemon and mead. Bottoms up.
