A Statue for Sylvia Pankhurst

Emily Thornberry, MP for Islington South and Finsbury and Shadow Foreign Secretary, is supporting a campaign to raise a statue to Sylvia Pankhurst, suffragette and political campaigner on Clerkenwell Green.

The campaign has taken a further step forward thanks to two locals people, Susanne Levin and Matthew Bell who have made a generous donation to The Sylvia Pankhurst Memorial Committee which is fundraising for the statue. Matthew and Susanne, both psychotherapists, set up The Farringdon Practice as a Social Enterprise.

A picture will be taken in front of the masquette of what will be an eight foot bronze statue of Sylvia Pankhurst. This is housed in The Marx Memorial Library, Clerkenwell Green where a book containing the name of every donor will be housed. Dubbed the “headquarters of republicanism, revolution and ultra non – conformity” Clerkenwell Green will be an excellent site for the statue.

The campaign has so far raised £75,000 from donations, but needs a further £70,000 for the statue to be erected by the end of the year. A JustGiving page has been set up for this purpose (see below).
