Arts Picnic The Big Dance Weekend 2014

Spa Fields Park on Northampton Road in Islington will be taken over on Saturday 12 July 2014 for Arts Picnic, a celebration of dance and visual arts, produced by Sadler’s Wells, Wayne McGregor | Random Dance, Cubitt Gallery and Studios and London Borough of Islington.

The atmosphere is vibrant street party meets family friendly village fete, featuring opportunities to watch dance performances, and join in with arts activities, such as face painting, arts and crafts, customising picnic blankets as well as a Suffragette’s tea party. There will be artist-led workshops, including a drawing boot camp and activist pass-the-parcel.

Dancers from Wayne McGregor | Random Dance will perform excerpts of their repertoire, alongside specially created performances by an intergenerational cast of local people. Performances will pop up in Spa Fields Park throughout the afternoon from 12-4pm. This event is a free and suitable for all ages.

The aim of the event is to celebrate the arts in Islington and to encourage visitors to explore what the arts mean to them, as well as how it can be a force for change in the community. The day brings together two key events: Big Dance, the UK’s biggest celebration of dance and dancing; and Cubitt’s Festival of Blackboards, an annual programme exploring art, education and social change.

The Arts Picnic is part of The Big Dance Weekend 2014. Big Dance is a biennial festival of dance and dancing led by the Mayor of London, the Foundation for Community Dance and a network of Big Dance Hubs. Big Dance 2012 was the UK’s largest ever celebration of dance as part of the London 2012 Festival.

The Big Dance Weekend on 12 & 13 July is the finale of the 2014 festival and includes exceptional performances and events by a range of international and UK choreographers in iconic public spaces. Big Dance is delivered through the UK’s leading dance organisations: Dance City, Pavilion Dance South West, Dance4, DanceEast, Dancefest, East London Dance, English National Ballet, Greenwich Dance, Merseyside Dance Initiative, Sadler’s Wells, Siobhan Davies Dance, South East Dance and Yorkshire Dance.
