Blitz Map

A new book from a principal archivist at the London Metropolitan Archives features a striking graphic representation of the bombardment of London during the Second World War.

The London County Council Bomb Damage Maps 1939-1945, by Laurence Ward (Thames & Hudson), incorporates the 110 meticulously hand-coloured maps that document the level of damage during the air raids on the capital. Significant bomb damage around Clerkenwell included the destruction of Cripplegate in 1940 (pictured). In the Sixties, this bombsite became the location of the Barbican estate. The book marks the first time that the maps have been published for a general audience.
