Caravaggio In Count
An old master on show in Clerkenwell has hit the headlines after a dispute about its authenticity.
Caravaggio’s The Cardsharps (1595) went on display at the Museum of the Order of St John in 2013. The artist was a member of the Order until he was expelled in 1608 after a violent brawl. Four hundred years on and the there’s a legal tussle at the High Court between the former owner and Sotheby’s, who assessed that the work was not by Caravaggio. It was sold in 2006 for £42,000, but its new owner soon valued the painting as a genuine Caravaggio worth £10 million. The picture is similar to another version by the artist on display in Texas.
