Championing Design, 100 percent…
The start of the summer is the time when Clerkenwell traditionally celebrates its status as the capital’s design hub and this year, of all years, is going to be a bonanza.
First, we have the third annual Clerkenwell Design Week (CDW) just around the corner, with its three days of festivities kicking off on 22 May. It’s not just an esteemed local, or even London, event – it has international renown. Sponsored again this year by Jaguar, it promises plenty of products, bespoke installations and inspiring showroom activities – as well as a new, third venue that’s suitably historic and “Clerkenwell”: the medieval crypt of the Priory Church in St John’s Square.
Then, for autumn, there’s 100% Design, which is on from 19 to 22 September, as part of the London Design Festival (LDF). Though it’s held at Earls Court, not here, Clerkenwell is now coursing through its veins, thanks to the recent takeover of the show by the owners of CDW, Media 10 (FYI, also the publishers of the Post). They’re promising to shake it up this year, giving it a new purpose, and have put former LDF deputy director William Knight in charge.
