STARTER

Remember, remember...to grow some facial hair this November. Now both sexes can get involved, as Clerkenwellbased Movember has launched a cookbook to support this year’s campaign (profits go to male health and cancer charities). The recipes in Cook Like a Man are all designed for preparing and sharing with friends and family and have been given to Movember by chefs from around the UK, including Seared river trout with apple puree and several other dishes from Caravan
chef Sam Wilson. The book is out now (Boxtree; £9.99).

MAIN

No sooner does Mark Hix decry the lack of butcher's shops in EC1 (Post, issue 15), then one of London's top chefs opens...you've guessed it. Richard Turner of Hawksmoor has teamed up with James George of the East London Steak Company to open a new butcher's on the former site of M&R Meats. Turner & George sells British rare- and traditional-breed beef, pork and lamb, plus game and poultry. All the meat comes from small farms and orders are cut by hand at the St John Street store. Its Christmas hamper, replete with a whole goose, Nyetimber, and Paul A. Young chocolates, has soared straight to the top of our wishlist.

PUDDING

Of all the gin joints in all the world... we'll take the glitzy new one right on our doorstep, thanks. Gin Joint at The Barbican is the arts centre's new bar and brasserie, where mother's ruin takes pride of place on the menu. The 30-strong gin list is comprised solely of London Dry styles (with the exception of Plymouth Gin), and the spirit is even available on tap. Signature cocktails include the Peppercorn, Beefeater Gin with rose syrup, grapefruit juice and freshly-ground black pepper.

Such a Draw

There are many reasons why Clerkenwell has become a “design destination”, and they’re all interwoven. But, like all of life, the story starts with one, vital thing: water.
