BALFOUR BAR
Can't decide between a pint in the pub or cocktails in a swish bar? St Bart's Brewery gives you both under one roof. The 120-cover pub and lounge opened in July on the site of the former Distillers pub by Smithfield Market. The sleek Balfour Bar is now open on the first floor. Balfour Bar specialises in 'English' cocktails, often using ingredients from the owners' Hush Heath Vineyard in Kent (famous for its Balfour sparkling rosé). Try a Cucumber Tom Collins, or cosy up on a cold night with a Rum Old Fashioned, made with English Harbour Rum and bitters.

TURNER & GEORGE/ST JOHN
Goodies from two EC1-based food emporiums can now be found in Selfridges. Turner & George butchery has a concession in Selfridges Food Hall. The shop (owned by chef Richard Turner of Hawksmoor and Pi Cue, and butcher James George) will be off ering a selection of British rare breed meat, game and herb-fed turkeys for Christmas. St John Bakery is also running a six-month pop-up in the department store. Visit during the week for breads and Eccles cakes, or get there early on Saturdays for one of its cult custard doughnuts.

EXMOUTH MARKET COOKBOOKS
Clerkenwell's restaurants have long been a source of inspiration for home cooks (Nose to Tail by St John's Fergus Henderson, the Moro series, The Modern Pantry Cookbook), and three recent releases all have Exmouth Market connections. Under consideration for your Christmas list: Hummus Bros. – Levantine Kitchen (£14.99; Pavilion) is packed with meze dishes and easy lunches from the small chain. Gail's has released Gail's Artisan Bake Cookbook (£20; Ebury), a collection of wholesome loaves, savoury bakes and easy cakes. Plus, in case you missed it earlier in the year, Morito (£26; Ebury) is the latest from Sam and Sam Clark. It features menu stalwarts from the tapas bar, plus pictures of Exmouth Market in all its glory.
