Katy Salter dishes up the local gastro need-to-know

One of the UK’s most talented chefs is coming to EC1. Jason Atherton is opening Sosharu in the Turnmill Building. It's a departure for Atherton, who rose to fame launching Maze for the Gordon Ramsay Group and went on to run his own group of ‘Social’ restaurants. Sosharu is billed as a “social Japanese dining experience”. Get your chopsticks ready: it will serve teppanyaki, sashimi and boast a Robata grill. There will also be an izakaya (the Japanese answer to the pub). Watch this space for a launch date.

Pg 9 Main Tasters

The 1970s are having a revival, as anyone who’s spotted flared dungarees in Clerkenwell can attest. Now EC1 is getting its very own Seventies-inspired bar on Exmouth Market. Coin Laundry is from Urban Leisure Group, the bar company behind Ask For Janice. With its retro décor (including a vintage pinball machine) and mission to bring back the chicken Kiev, Coin Laundry promises to be an irreverent addition. They’re reviving out-of- favour-cocktails, too. Opens September.

Pg 9 Main Mark Hix

Our food columnist Mark Hix has shared plenty of expert advice on these pages. But now you’ve got the chance to gain a little culinary wisdom in Hix’s own home. Mark’s Kitchen Tables is a series of cooking demos held at his house in Charmouth, Dorset. Mark will be whipping up a four-course lunch in his kitchen, and the sessions are limited to just eight people. Each course is paired with wines and you’ll also receive a copy of his latest book. Classes take place on 27 July, 28 September and 19 October.
