Katy Salter dishes up the local gastro need-to-know

COUNTER KITCHEN
Clean eating has hit Clerkenwell. Counter Kitchen is a new ‘mindfulness’ café on Goswell Road. The kitchen is headed up by Matt Edwards, formerly of Hix, Quo Vadis and St John, and the menu is packed with seasonal goodies that don’t sacrifice flavour for healthiness. Think avocado toast with homemade kimchi for breakfast, and filling lunch bowls such as cured salmon and kohlrabi or wild mushroom with daikon and soba noodles. They also serve AllPress coffee and biodynamic wines – sounds like our kind of healthy. www.counterkitchen.com.

COOK FOR SYRIA
Leading Instagrammer Clerkenwell_Boy is using his foodie clout for a worthy cause. Cook for Syria is a month-long initiative this November in aid of UNICEF UK’s Children of Syria Fund. Top restaurants are putting Syrian-inspired dishes on their menus, and anyone can take part at home by organising a Cook for Syria dinner to raise money for the charity fund. Clerkenwell area restaurants talking part including Berber & Q Shawarma Bar, Caravan, Grain Store, Ottolenghi, Pizza Pilgrims and The Modern Pantry. PANZO
EC1 is turning into a pizza hot spot faster than you can say margherita with extra cheese. Panzo, new to Exmouth Market, is a Neapolitan-inspired restaurant. Its pizzas are made with dough that is left to rise for 26 hours and double-cooked to ensure a light, crispy base. Toppings will vary with the seasons, so this autumn expect pumpkin and mozzarella or gorgonzola, raisin and apple. Also on the menu is the panuozzo, a Neapolitan pizza sandwich, which sounds like a strong candidate for Clerkenwell’s next cult lunch item. www.panzopizza.com.
