This spring marks 200 years since the birth of one of Britain's best-loved writers – Charlotte Brontë.

A free exhibition, which features some of the author's treasured possessions, is at Sir John Soane's Museum until 7 May. Brontë was born on 21 April, 1816 in Yorkshire, where she spent most of her life in obscurity.

But following the success of Jane Eyre in 1847, she visited London on five occasions. The exhibition, curated by artist Charlotte Cory, features the guidebook Brontë used to explore the city as well as a dress she wore to dinner with her publisher. There are also newly discovered sketches of the Brontë sisters, drawn by their sister Anne.
