Sculptor Antony Gormley has collaborated with Sadler’s Wells to mark the 20th anniversary of the current theatre.

It’s the sixth building on the Clerkenwell site since it was established by Richard Sadler in 1683. To celebrate the last two decades, Sadler’s Wells has announced 20 commissions from artists including Natalia Osipova, Mark Morris, William Forsythe, Sharon Eyal and Akram Khan in 2018.

The most high-profile production will be Icon with former Turner Prize winner Gormley, best known for the Angel of the North. Co-created with choreographer Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, it explores “concepts of iconoclasm” and - definitely a first for Sadler’s Wells - will use more than three tonnes of clay. Sadler’s Wells artistic director and chief executive Alistair Spalding said it was “messier than usual for the dancers”. Icon is set to open in late November.
