It’s only a good thing for Clerkenwell that the people behind the annual May design-fest Clerkenwell Design Week, Media 10, have yet again posted record attendance numbers for this year’s event.
It’s now the fifth time the festival has been held and each year it’s drawn more and more people to EC1 – not just from the locality or London but also from abroad. This year’s figure, for you crunchers out there, was 32,300; that’s 10 per cent up on last year.
Here are some more facts. More than half of the visitors were architects or designers. More than 60 local showrooms got involved with the event. The four exhibition venues (the Farmiloe building, the House of Detention, the crypt of St John and St James’s church) provided a combined total of 2,856 square metres of show space for design brands from more than 20 countries. And there were 7,200 tiles in the Tile Mile installation (pictured), by architect-designers Russ & Henshaw, at St John’s Gate. It took nearly 100 hours to build. The really important numbers you need to know, however, are the dates for next year’s event. Put 19-21 May into your 2015 diary.
