The Shard may garner headlines, but design buffs know that London’s real architectural gems are often overlooked.
The recent Lesser Known Architecture exhibition at the Design Museum sought to rectify this, by asking leading critics to nominate their favourite under-the-radar buildings. The Farringdon area garnered two nominations: one for Bevin Court, the modernist housing blocks, and one for Mail Rail – the Post Office’s now-closed underground railway, which had its largest station at Mount Pleasant (for more on Mount Pleasant’s redevelopment, see p13). You can still buy limited edition prints of both structures by Theo Simpson (Bevin Court, above) from the museum’s shop. www.designmuseumshop.com.
