Smithfield Saviours

It’s crunch time for Smithfield General Market. Campaigners won the first stage of their battle to save the disused Victorian market halls last autumn, when the contentious £160 million office and retail redevelopment – approved by the City of London Corporation – was referred to a public inquiry (which runs from 11-28 February).

SAVE Britain’s Heritage and the Victorian Society are pressing their case with their alternative joint planning proposal, drawn up by architects Burrell Foley Fischer, which would see Camden Market operator Urban Space Management revive Smithfield General Market as a market. The Victorian Society describes it as “perhaps the most impressive, large-scale and complete complex of market buildings in England”.
