After five years in Exmouth Market, Clerkenwell Tales recently shut its doors for the last time.
Although it’s been a tough time for independent bookshops, the closure was actually down to owner Peter Ho’s decision to relocate to Toronto. The sale did brisk business and regulars said their farewells – local author Jake Arnott donated a bottle of bubbly. Cartoonist Posy Simmonds has expressed her dismay at the closure (see p26). For bereft book lovers, children’s bookshop and craft stockist Bookends in Exmouth Market can order any type of book for the next day. There’s Magma in Clerkenwell Road for art and design books, while City University Waterstones has some general fiction amidst the textbooks.
