The look and feel of a restaurant are almost as important as the food. What better place then than Clerkenwell – which we like to think of as the UK’s design capital – to hold the Restaurant and Bar Design Awards. The Awards will be held at the Farmiloe Building in mid-September and include trophies for restaurants and bars in historic buildings, hotels and other spaces – as well as some international awards. Hawksmoor’s formula of top-quality steaks, stylish interiors and potent cocktails has made the small group of restaurants a huge success. But for their latest venture, and first foray into EC1, owners Will Beckett and Huw Gott aren’t opening another Hawksmoor, but a new restaurant called Foxlow. Many of the details are under wraps for now. Hybrid desserts are all the rage. It started with the Cronut – a croissant-doughnut cross cannily trademarked by a New York bakery. Bea Vo of Bea’s of Bloomsbury has taken up the challenge here, with her Duffins (doughnut-muffins) and Townies (a brownie-tart). You can try both at the new ‘Mini Bea’s’ next door to Farringdon tube. This petite outpost of the bakery offers Square Mile Coffee, cupcakes, brownies and of course those hybrid treats. In other words, says Bea: “we’re essentially
the sweet-treat office break.”
